Jowls & Neck

Posted by Cosmetic Digital on Thursday 14th March 2024 at 10:13 am

Jowls are defined as the accumulation of skin and/ or fat around the jawline causing it to lose shape and definition. These changes also occur in the neck with loss of skin elasticity being the dominating factor.

In Medical Aesthetics we are always looking at ways to restore facial proportions to make patients look more youthful. A young face conforms to the ‘beauty triangle’ in that the cheeks and mid face are wider than the lower face. However as we age these proportions change as the jaw line becomes fuller giving an older face a square appearance.

One of the reasons for these changes is the loss of fat in the mid face. This is a good place to have fat as it forms the foundations of the facial structure. As we age, this fat breaks down and volume and shape is lost. The face falls in a downward, forward motion leading to the development of the Nasolabial folds (nose to mouth lines), Marionettes (mouth to chin creases) and the accumulation of fat and skin around the jawline. The skin of the neck is very different to that in the face and is subject to loss of elasticity causing it to look ‘saggy’.

There are several ways in which we can use non surgical treatments to restore these favourable proportions and make the face look younger and fresher. Every face is different and therefore the advice as to which treatment is best may also differ from person to person. Sometimes a combination of treatment may be required to get the best results.

This is why it is so important to have a full consultation with one of our Medical Aesthetic experts. At Persona you can be guaranteed an honest opinion and we will only recommend treatments that we feel will give you the best results and meet our high expectations.

Dermal Fillers

These are not only used to reduce lines and wrinkles but also to shape and contour the face. Fillers are a viscous gel which gives volume. By using these in the mid face, lost volume can be replaced in a natural way to restore that youthful appearance. This is not about giving patients big cheeks, unless this is what you want, but about putting back the natural fullness from years gone by. The Nasolabial folds & Marionettes can be lifted and in some cases the jawline shaped for greater definition.

Laser Skin Tightening & HIFU

These are machine based methods designed to increase collagen production. They stimulate the skin to make more type I collagen and improve the quality of exisitng collagen which has often lost its tightness due to ageing and other factors. These methods are most suited to those with minimal jowl and neck laxity.

Fat Removal

If fat around the jowl & jawline is the main problem, then this simple treatment may be all that’s required to define the area. Aqualyx is a product which is injected into the fat under the skin and literally dissolves it away. It works particularly well on smaller areas such as the jowls & double chin. If the skin needs to be tightened further then having less heaviness in the jawline will allow the skin to be tightened and lifted more effectively.

Thread Lift

This is the ultimate treatment for tightening and toning up the jawline and neck as this is a physical lift without the knife. We all look in the mirror and pull our skin back, thinking if only it would stay there. Well this is where a Thread Lift comes in.

Threads are placed under the skin and when retracted cause the skin to lift and be anchored in position. They are similar to a long suture which has hundreds of small knots on it which is how they hold the skin in the lifted position.

At Persona we use Spring threads, made of a revolutionary new material giving much better, longer lasting results. Many top London clinics & Medical Aesthetic Doctors are now using these new threads due to their excellent safety profile, great lifting and tightening capacity and long lasting results. They are aptly named “spring” because they are elastic so can easily stretch and contract with facial movements therefore reducing the risk of breakage and creating a very effective yet natural enhancement.
